We didn’t know that romance causes trouble!

We're kids and don't understand, but a man named Mr. McDonald says people have to be careful at work if they fall in love. He said it’s a bad idea for someone who is a supervisor to "pursue an affair" (what's an affair?) with a subordinate. We don't know what a supervisor and a subordinate is, but we work everyday helping each other clean up the kitchen!

We think people should be allowed to kiss at work! A boy down the street just graduated from elementary school and he's really cute. People say someday he'll be a boss. Well, I would like to kiss him really big right on the cheek! So would my friend DotComplicated and my sister Mei Mei!

We like him so much we're going to send a Valentine's Day card to him — one of the ones we designed ourselves! See Valentine's Day cards for geeks to give — cards without the 'L' word! — at The Computious Gift Gallery.

A lady we like named Jan Norman at the Orange County Register wrote about this — see "Office romance flirts with disaster."

Celebrate Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day on the Same Day this Year!

High-tech people send us emails and we got one today from Verizon Wireless. They said that in 2010 the Chinese New Year marks "The Year of the Tiger." All day long C.C. the Cat has pretended to be a Tiger and he's trying to sound real scary, saying "Grrrrrrrrrrrr!!"

Then we realized the date — February 14 — is the same day as Valentine's Day! We're planning a party! We're having hot & sour soup, Chinese New Year good luck oranges, and chocolates and brownies in the shape of hearts!

Wikipedia says the "Chinese New Year or Spring Festival is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. It is sometimes called the 'Lunar New Year' by English speakers." We really like the part where they say "The tradition is a great way to reconcile forgetting all grudges, and sincerely wish peace and happiness for everyone." See the full entry here.

The day is celebrated with fireworks, dragon dances, lion dances, big family meals, and decorating with Duilian.

The thing we like the most is we get red envelopes with money! Tradition says that they give good luck and ward off evil spirits. See Wikipedia for pictures of how pretty the red envelopes look!

The tiger is supposed to mean courage, strength and wisdom. That makes us think of Tony the Tiger on the Frosted Flakes box. In 1974 (way before we were born!), the Kellogg's cereal people said "This is the Year of the Tiger and Tony is the Tiger of the Year".

We want everybody to know that the Verizon Wireless people did not pay us anything to say why we're so happy with their email. For one thing, we're happy over just about everything!

Also, we learned that the Verizon people are having special events and a student Lunar New Year Essay Contest. Here's what they said to us in the email –

Starting February 6, students can enter to win a $5,000 cash award by answering the following questions in 500 words or less:

  • What does Lunar New Year mean to you and your family?
  • What would you like to accomplish in the Year of the Tiger?

Students must be between the ages of 13 and 24 and attend an accredited high school or college.

That means we're not old enough to enter!

If you go here you'll see they are also giving away a Samsung Renown Global Phone and $75 dollars in Verizon Wireless Giftcards. They also are inviting everybody to go to their special events in Seattle, Portland and in places in California — San Gabriel Valley, Orange County, Garden Grove, San Diego, Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Chinese speaking customers can use a website designed just for them! Go here and find "translated features" including "Backup Assistant, VZ Navigator, Chaperone, VCAST Music with Rhapsody, ringtones and ringback tones and text messaging." The website also links to information in Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean.

Verizon Wireless ends by saying, "Wishing you prosperity through fortitude and hard work in 2010!" We with that for them, too! We like them so much we're going to send Valentine's Day cards to them — cards that we designed ourselves! See Valentine's Day cards for guys & geeks to give — cards without the 'L' word! — at The Computious Gift Gallery.

Yikes! What will happen to our blog?

When we saw the headline at PCmag.com, we almost choked on our pizza! It said "Blogs Just Aren't Cool Any More, Teens Say." No way!

The story said that blogging is more of a thing for adults while teens are leaving blogs for social networks. The study gave all kinds of statistics to prove their point. But the information came from phone interviews from something they call "a nationally representative sample." But none of us were asked and our cell phones are always on! Our friends weren't contacted! No phone calls were made to our families! That's why we think the report is wrong!

We have evidence that teens read our blog! The other day we pointed out that we design Valentine's Day cards ourselves! (See Valentine's Day cards for guys & geeks to give — cards without the 'L' word! — at The Computious Gift Gallery.) And do you know what happened after that? Somebody in Silver Spring, Maryland bought 50 cards and took the time to personalize each and every one! (We're all wondering, "What did they say?!") We think that was a teen because how many older people will take time away from LinkedIn to send out 50 cards? But we all do!

The study also showed that social networking is increasing, and we believe that. We would be on Facebook and Twitter and be text-messaging more But with school and activities and friends and eating pizza, we only have so much time!

See the PCmag.com story "Blogs Just Aren't Cool Any More, Teens Say."

USA TODAY also wrote about this at "The young prefer Facebook to blogging, Twitter."

‘Frontline Digital Nation’ - What a Show!

We just watched a new show that PBS describes like this: "In Digital Nation: Life on the Virtual Frontier, FRONTLINE presents an in-depth exploration of what it means to be human in a 21st-century digital world." We think they should do a show about what it's like to be a cartoon character in a digital world!

A commentator for the program is Douglas Rushkoff who they call a "leading thinker and writer on the digital revolution — and one-time evangelist for technology's positive impact." Wait a minute! That's my friend Computious — she's the "Everyday Sage of the Digital Age!" And she's really positive, too!

Second Life founder Philip Rosedale tells Rushkoff. "We've gone from watching movies together to watching them in living rooms to watching them on iPods. And I think that technology is starting to bring us back together again." We agree. We use technology and we're together all the time!

Moms and dads can learn how to "protect and empower kids" by taking the Digital Parenting Style Quiz. And you can go here and watch the entire program online.

We like the show so much we're going to send Valentine's Day cards to the show's creators. They will be cards that we designed ourselves! See Valentine's Day cards for guys & geeks to give — cards without the 'L' word! — at The Computious Gift Gallery.

Will Trade a Valentine’s Day Card for an iPad!

Somebody asked me today, "OK. If you're the Everyday Sage of the Digital Age, did Apple send you the new iPad so that you can see if you like it?" I said that we didn't have one yet but it's probably because Steve Jobs doesn't have our mailing address.

In the meantime, we went here to see how the iPad can be used for the web, email, photos and video. We have an iPod so the iTunes store looked familiar (and we learned that Apple has sold 250 million iPods!). We also saw that Apple now has iBooks.

My friend Serge deFault went here to learn the iPad's technical details — he's impressed that the iPad is really thin — only half-an-inch! The iPad has something called iWork, which Serge likes because he creates lots of spreadsheets, and has an "Arsenic-free display glass." That scared us! What do we own in our house that has arsenic in the glass? See specs.

We're a big fan of Tamara Chuang, The Gadgetress at the Orange County Register, who published a collection of comments about the iPad here.

Another friend of mine, DotComplicated, told me that other experts are speaking up! Gizmodo has an article entitled "Apple iPad Just Tried To Assassinate Laptops" (gosh, are they allowed to do that?).

Daring Fireball by John Gruber points out the iPad won't even ship for another 53 days. Stephen Fry, who likes the iPad, started his article this way: "Well bless my soul and whiskers. This is the first time I’ve joined the congregation at the Church of Apple for a new product launch." C.C. the Cat liked the reference to whiskers! See "iPad About."

If Steve Jobs will send us an iPad, we'll send him a Valentine's Day card that we designed ourselves! See Valentine's Day cards for guys & geeks to give — cards without the 'L' word! — at The Computious Gift Gallery.

Computious:

We went online to see the previews for the movie that's coming out, "Valentine's Day" and we can't wait to go! My favorite actors Anne Hathaway (who will be introducing the Oscars this year)and Jessica Alba are in the movie. My sister, Mei Mei, asked "Since George Lopez  is in the movie will his little boy Max from his TV show also be in it?" (Mei Mei has a crush on Maximilian "Max" Lopez and wishes he would create a website!) And my best friend, DotComplicated, asked if Taylor Swift will sing in the movie

The only person I know who isn't excited is Serge deFault. He says, "I'm glad I'm not old enough to date 'cause some girl would probably make me go to this girl's movie." Serge is proud of being a geek and spends a lot of time on a new search engine, SearchGeek, trying to find out how to create a remotely controlled body like they have in "Avatar" — that's a movie he wants to see for the tenth time!

Note! See Valentine's Day cards for guys & geeks to give — cards without the 'L' word! — at The Computious Gift Gallery.

We recently learned about Alia Sabur, who became the world's
youngest professor at 18, according to The Guinness Book of
World Records
. She was hired three days before her 19th birthday
to teach at Konkuk University in Seoul, South Korea.

Alia started college at the age of ten and went on to earn a Ph.D. in
materials science and engineering. Wow! She’s also an accomplished
clarinetist. We wish her well, especially since she’s directing some of
her research toward curing diseases. You can read about her and
watch a video of her on a Today Show interview here.

earned $72 million between June 2006 and June 2007, the time

period on which the list is based. Beautiful Beyonce Knowles

is No. 5, while Britney Spears is No. 14. Here’s more information.

Congratulations to Kirsten Haglund, who was crowned Miss America

2008 last night! She represented Michigan and comes from Farmington Hills,

a suburb of Detroit. She’s 19 years old, studies music at the University of

Cincinnati, and would like to be a Broadway star. So now Kristen has a

$50,000 scholarship and a year-long travel schedule to talk about the

pageant, her platform issue (eating disorders, from which she has

recovered), and the Children’s Miracle Network. Thank you to the
