My Aunt Joanie emailed my mom the other day about a book which
was so good she just had to recommend it. She normally doesn’t
push people to read the same books she reads, but "this one is so
outstanding (in my mind) that I have to share it.” What book is it?
Snow Flower and The Secret Fan by Lisa See. Here’s what Aunt
Joanie said:

Book - Snow Flower and the Secret Fan It is the most remarkable story of a girl in China; the
tradition of foot binding; arranged marriages; a secret
form of writing called "nu shu" invented by women to
keep their secrets safe from men; and the custom of
having a "laotong" — or a contracted, forever girlfriend
— as opposed to "sworn sisters" who were not blood
but sworn to each other to be there for each other
but not on the same level as the laotong.

Written in the same "voice" as Amy Tan, it is richer and goes so
deeply into the world of these women that you will feel that you
are there with them.

Wow! Guess what book I’m going to read soon?!

‘iBrain’ - How Technology is Changing Our Brains

                                                        P   O   S   T   E   R   S

Computious:

How does modern digital technology, especially computers and video games,
affect our brains?
Dr. Gary Small, focuses on this question in his new book
iBrain…Surviving the Technological Alteration of the Modern Mind. A respected

Book - iBrain by Dr. Gary Smallneuroscientist, Dr. Small discusses how high tech develops
certain regions of the brain more in those who have known
computer technology since birth (“digital natives”) versus in
those who learned technology as adults (“digital immigrants”).
Digital natives multi-task easily and are gaining in IQ scores.
They often lack social skills, though. The parts of the brain
that control empathy are not exercised adequately due to
lack of face-to-face interaction.

Middle-aged digital immigrants are supposed to have an ad-
vantage because their brains are “plastic” enough to learn
new technologies, but they also had the chance to develop
critical social skills.

The good, the bad, and the ugly of high tech’s impact on brains:

Good: accelerated learning, increased creativity;

Bad: more social isolation, Internet addiction;

Ugly: steep rise in ADD diagnoses.

Thank you to Michele Lyons for telling my mom about this book!

Chinese New Year 2009

Computious with Chinese New Year clothes 3                            Tote Bag - PingPong the panda leaping for joy
                                                             "HAPPY PANDA"
                                                                                       TOTE BAG

Computious:

Chinese New Year began a few days ago on January 26, 2009. It's
the "Year of the Ox"! Those born in this year are supposed to be
stable, hardworking, and sometimes stubborn. Walt Disney was
born in an ox year.

The 15-day celebration is a time of festivity, food, and most
importantly, family. So here’s our “family” sharing with you some
of our favorite Chinese New Year traditions:

Sweet & Sour the Pig:                     Sweet & sour cleaning
Unlike what people think, pigs can be just as clean as other
popular pets. I love cleanliness! My favorite part of Chinese
New Year is the time before new year’s when we clean up the
house. We “sweep out” the bad luck and start fresh.

MeiMei singing - with red dress

MeiMei, Computious' little sister:

In addition to all the good food, I like receiving
the red envelope with “lucky” money in it.
Usually children and single people receive
them. I’m saving for college, but I’ve got
my eye on an iPhone too!

                                      PingPong - Giggles copyright

PingPong the Panda:

With my sweet tooth, of course I love the sweet goodies.
My favorite is the sticky rice ball with red bean paste. The
stickiness symbolizes family loyalty — sticking together!

 Elman - Fireworks
Elman the Elephant
:
I like the firecrackers that welcome the beginning of the new year. Many people believe the Chinese invented firecrackers and fire- works. (Children need to be careful and stay near their parents.) Because my hearing is so sharp (my ears are big!) I usually stay inside to listen to the firecrackers. Otherwise I get a headache!

DotComplicated - red
DotComplicated -
She makes things complicated!

My favorite tradition comes from Northern China,
where on New Year’s Eve they serve potstickers
(“jiao zi”)
. They represent wealth because their
shape looks like golden ingots, which were used as
money many years ago. Computious taught me how
to eat these tasty dumplings with chopsticks, too!

        C.C. - cheshire smile

C.C. the Cat:
My favorite Chinese New Year’s tradition? Is when it’s
the Year of the Tiger! One more year to go! Besides that,
though, I like to polish my claws practicing my Chinese
paper cutting skills to make the decorations for the doors
and windows. I usually end up with paper cuts on my paws
(ouch!) and you’ll see me wearing a lot of Band-Aids.

     Serge with copyright
Serge deFault:
I like being part of the dragon in the Dragon Dance, which is on the last day of the New Year celebrations. Many Chinese equate the length of the dancing dragon with the amount of good luck the new year will bring. Dragons have been powerful symbols in Chinese culture for centuries. Most of them are good.

Computious with New Year’s party hat

Computious:
I love all the red clothing and decorations. Red is a powerful
color in the Chinese culture and symbolizes good fortune.
Many families buy new clothes for the new year. That’s one
of my favorite traditions!

Chinese New Year is a time of new beginnings, family
reunion, and wishing others well. We wish you only
the best!

memorializes the adoption of the U.S. Declaration of
Independence
in 1776. Bastille Day, on July 14th, is
sometimes thought of as the French Fourth of July.
Thomas Jefferson
, the main author of the U.S. Declaration
of Independence, wrote one of its most recognized
phrases: “Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Most of us take for granted everyone wants to be happy.
Computious told me about a book which came out earlier
this year called Stumbling on Happiness. It talks about how
it’s not easy for a lot of us to figure out what will actually
make us happy. Why? The author Daniel Gilbert says it’s because
the decisions we make for our future are made in the present,
influenced by the present, but our “future selves won’t see the
world the way we see it now.” We will change, our world will
change. We won’t know for certain how we’ll feel until we’re in
the future situation. Hmmm…I know one thing — three things have
always made me happy: friends, hula dancing and chocolate! The
book sounds interesting…

What Is It You Want To Be Famous For?

Computious:

Tomorrow, on April 15, 2008, Hyperion Books releases a
new book by Maria Shriver which looks wonderful! She’s an
award-winning journalist and the First Lady of California. She
also has four children! We admire her mother, Eunice Shriver,
for founding the Special Olympics. (Eunice Shriver is a younger
sister of U.S. President John F. Kennedy.)

Book - Just Who Will You Be? Just Who Will You Be?, the new book, was
inspired in part by reports that a majority
of kids have a main goal of being famous.
(In an early January 2007 Pew Research
Center
poll, 81% of 18- to 25-year-olds
said their first- or second-most-important
life goal is to be rich; 51% said the same
about being famous.)

Just Who Will You Be? asks the important
question of what is it you want to be famous
for. I love some of the inspiring suggestions:
to set our sights high by aspiring to be great

in order to have positive impact in the world — and to do it with
integrity. We all can be great in our own way by “starring in our
own lives
!”

Thank you to: USA Today for the reference to the Pew poll; and
Reader’s Digest
for first bringing this book to our attention.
