2007: Also the Year of the ‘Zero Trans Fat’ Girl Scout Cookie

PingPong hungry w-name          Girl Scout Cookies

PingPong:
As I’ve said before, I really have a sweet tooth (my New Year’s Resolution was to control it!). Well, I learned that this year, all eight varieties of Girl Scout Cookies meet the “zero trans fat” definition. Did you know that the most popular one is “Thin Mints”? My favorite is the Samoa – I love the caramel, chocolate, and coconut together. Yum!  I also like it because its name reminds me of Polynesian culture, and I love to hula!

If you’re starting to want a Girl Scout cookie, you can email them to have a local Girl Scout get in touch with you! Bye for now, I'm going to practice my hula!

From Bach to Rock

Sweet & Sour - grand piano Sweet &Sour - name plate Sweet & Sour - Stratocaster

Sweet & Sour:
I’m a “Bach to Rock” kind of music lover, so I was interested in last week’s International Music Products Association’s annual trade show at the Anaheim Convention Center. It was the 105th NAMM Show (they used to be called the National Association of Music Merchants when they started years ago). There were close to 85,000 people who registered!

One of the most exciting new products at the show was Fender’s VG Stratocaster (as you can see, I have an older Stratocaster — my red one!).

What's so special about the "VG"? It’s the first of its kind by having “onboard modeling,” where it can sound like different kinds of guitars, without other equipment! The extra functions are all in the guitar itself. There’s more versatility with no inconvenience, and it looks almost the same. Wow! A small “Mode” knob on the guitar gives the choice of six modes: normal, modeled Stratocaster, Telecaster, Humbucking, Pickups, and Acoustic. The "Tuning Function" knob lets us make instant tuning changes without needing to adjust the string tension. Another wow!

Thank you, NAMM, for promoting the benefits of music, and congratulations on winning the “Craftsman” Trophy at the 2007 Tournament of Roses Parade!

Computious & DotComplicated:
Someone we look up to because of her talent, brains, and beauty (not to mention her height!) is Michelle Wie. The good news for her recently is that she got accepted to Stanford University and will be going there this fall. The not-as-good recent news is how she’s been performing in her golf competitions. She’s only 17 and has a lot of pressure on her. We’re confident she'll do better in the future!

Did you know that by the time Michelle was in her early teens, she was already six feet tall? That got us thinking about other interesting “tall girls,” such as:

Gabrielle Reece, the 6 feet, 3 inches professional volleyball player.

Ye Li, a 6 feet, 2¾ inches Chinese basketball player, who is also the girlfriend of famous Houston Rockets basketball player Yao Ming.

Maria Sharapova, the tennis star, and Julia Child, the respected and often funny Master Chef who passed away a couple years ago, are two accomplished "6 feet, 2 inchers."

Supermodel Elle McPherson, great American political leader and humanitarian Eleanor Roosevelt, and actresses Brooke Shields and Uma Thurman are all 6 feet, 1 inch.

The tallest living woman, at 7 feet, 7¼ inches, is American Sandy Allen.  She serves as spokesperson for a program called “I'm Big on Books –You Can Be Too!”  Thank you, Sandy, we’re big on books, also!!

Who Wants to be a Millionaire

Computious & Serge:

According to a recent survey of 300 girls and boys ages 9-11 who are a nationally representative sample, 69 percent of them said it was very important to them to become a millionaire. Fifty-seven percent of them also said that being married and having a happy family is very important. A company called “Funosophy” (what a great name!) conducted this survey, along with its research partner KidszEyes. The Toy Book, a leading toy industry publication, has a story on this in their January issue.

Most people know about the hit TV show “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire,” now hosted by Meredith Vieira. There’s also, though, an online version for math and science fans called “Who Wants to Win a Million Dollars! The money isn’t real, but maybe some of the 27 percent of kids in the Funosophy survey who said they aspired to be "a brilliant scientist or inventor" when they grow up would want to see if they can reach the million-dollar level!

Ice Skaters I Love

PingPong - Giggles     Skates  PingPong's name

I love figure skating, and I’m soooooo excited about the 2007 U.S. Figure Skating Championships coming up in Spokane, Washington, January 21 – 28!!

Four of my favorite skaters won’t be in this year’s competition, but they’re all stars:

Of course I adore Michelle Kwan — she’s so graceful, has won all kinds of awards, and has the most “6.0’s” (perfect score) from the U.S. Nationals. Recently, Michelle became a volunteer diplomat for the State Department's Education and Cultural Affairs program. She’s studying international politics at the University of Denver, where Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice got her Ph.D. Guess what? Ms. Rice was a competitive skater when she was a child!

Then there’s the lovely Sasha Cohen who lives in beautiful Corona del Mar, CA. She’s not competing this year in order to take a break, but plans to be in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Another skater I love is Kurt Browning. He's in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the first person to land a quadruple toe loop in competition! He's married to ballerina Sonia Rodriguez (some of that gracefulness rubbed off on Kurt). I really like how much fun Kurt can be on the ice!

The fourth skater was not a professional one, but definitely a special one. In fact, the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame is inducting him during January’s U.S. Championships in Spokane! It’s Charles Schulz, the creator of the Peanuts comic strip, one of the most popular in the world! When he was alive, he enjoyed ice hockey and figure skating, and even owned an ice skating rink in Santa Rosa, CA, called the Redwood Empire Ice Arena.  His wife will accept the award – here’s the story.

Computious:
We just read about an interesting eight-year-old student in India, who designed her school’s first-ever website. Her name is Sreelakshmi Suresh and she’s one of the youngest members of the American Association of Webmasters! Her interest in computers and the internet started when her parents encouraged her four years ago. The website debuts tomorrow, January 15, and we want to send a big congratulations to Sreelakshmi!

Hard Knocks for Tigger?

C.C.:  Uh-oh, Tigger may be in trouble. A teenager from New Hampshire who was visiting Disney World with his family says he got swatted by the usually fun tiger.  While this is being investigated, I’m keeping my paws crossed that this was a misunderstanding.  I know how kids can sometimes get rough with animals – ouch!

C.C.:
I like hanging out with big cats like lions because I can always learn something from them. But did you see the news about an African Lion named Jupiter giving his caretaker, Ana Julia Torres, a big hug and kiss? They said he’s grateful for all the “TLC” he’s received the past six years when he was rescued from a traveling circus where he was abused. I’m mad thinking about that!

Jupiter is one of about 800 (!) animals at that shelter for injured and mistreated animals. Ana Julia started the shelter more than ten years ago. It’s in Cali, Columbia, and I want to visit that shelter.

By the way, Computious, DotComplicated, MeiMei, and PingPong hug and kiss me a lot! (I try not to show how much I enjoy it.)

Thank you, Shepard Smith, for reporting it on TV yesterday. Here's a written account. See Jupiter and Ana Julia on YouTube.

MeiMei:  Another computer and tech expert we ADORE is Kim Komando! She’s so sharp, she got her college degree from Arizona State University when she was 20. Her mother was part of the team that developed the UNIX operating system.

She has a weekend talk radio show that receives about 50,000 calls an hour(!) and it’s aired on more than 450 stations. Kim has written eight books with tips about computers, the internet and other digital technology. Many newspapers, including USA Today.com, publish her column. She also has a 6-year-old son. I'm exhausted just thinking about all that!

Kim’s nickname is the “Digital Goddess,” and here’s her website – have fun!!
