C.C.

Back in March I spoke about wearing the "No Complaints" purple band offered by a church in Kansas City, Missouri, to remind myself to be less sarcastic and critical. Fewer than 200,000 bands circulated then. In six short months, more than 5 MILLION purple bands have been requested. Talk about a "critical" mass!

Computious keeps finding out about the health benefits of gratitude. Then she reminds me because she hopes I'll be less of a grump. (But that's part of my curmudgeonly charm!)

Thanks book by Robert Emmons

The other day someone told her about a book named "Thanks!"  It includes scientific research on how gratitude helps us. Dr. Robert Emmons, a professor at the University of California at Davis, conducted a lot of the research and wrote the book. He's also editor-in-chief of the Journal of Positive Psychology

Okay, "thanks" for more pressure, Dr. Emmons! In my case, the stress of being nicer may shorten one of my nine lives. Here's a link to a summary of his findings.

Why Geeks are Cool – Free Report!

Serge:

The other day one of my non-technology friends told me he was worried about someone referring to him as a “geek.” He thought it might be an insult. Au contraire – what a compliment!

Yes, in previous generations the term “geek” had a negative connotation. But after geeks like Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, Netscape founder Jim Clark, and Google founders Sergey Brin and Larry Page changed the world through technology, it’s become an accolade.

Keanu Reeves - Neo in Matrix

According to a well-established company that assists managers and executives in their communications skills, "passion and focus" define a geek. This company, Communispond, regards 1999 as the year the negative stereotype of the geek received a fatal blow with the release of the movie “The Matrix.”  Keanu Reeves’ character Thomas Anderson (hacker name: Neo) ushered in the next-generation geek: hypercool in his sleek, billowing black trenchcoat and sunglasses, and Superman-ly in his ability to traverse the virtual world while combating evil.

Communispond’s free report actually focuses
on how the necessarily precise language style
of technical professionals sometimes becomes self-defeating self-expression when dealing
with non-technical colleagues. The report                            "MATRIX" CHARACTER
recommends seven techniques to prevent                       THOMAS ANDERSON/NEO      “lose-lose” outcomes. Here's the                               HERALDS "SUPER GEEK HERO"
link to the report. Thank you
Communispond for the suggestions!

Five Wags for Five Pig Tails!

Sweet & Sour the Pig - pigtail wags script

Sweet & Sour:

Parade Magazine offers a "Snapshot" column to which readers can submit their photos and receive $100 if their photo is selected for publication in the weekly print version. This Sunday's (today's) selected photo, below, featured the humor of piglet posteriors, submitted by Linda Michalovic Crawley of Brookfield, Illinois

                                Parade Magazine - Pig Tails

For details on how and where to send your photos, click here.  Parade's "Snapshot" column is an engaging activity, so I gave it my highest rating of (coincidentally) five pigtail wags.

For piglet racing fans, here's a link to a short YouTube video.

PingPong the Panda:

I love bamboo and chocolate, but I’ve found a new treat! In our previous blog entry, Computious highlighted Katie Leung, the actress who plays “Cho Chang” in the Harry Potter movies. Two days ago we met a successful entrepreneur with the same last name: Marina Leung.

Marina has created an award-winning line of delicious all-vegetarian soy jerky, named “Tasty Eats.” Yum yum!  There are eight flavors, including Hot ‘N Spicy, Teriyaki, and Cajun. Here’s the link to find out more.

And congratulations, Marina, on your new facility!

Card - Birthday - Grand piano Sweet & Sour the Pig

In the famously successful Harry Potter series, Cho Chang is the popular and pretty student in whom Harry is interested. I always liked it that she was kind to him when she turned down his invitation to the Yule Ball (in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire) since she had already been invited.

The Scottish actress who plays Cho –  Katie Leung — turned 20 years old on August 8th.  Happy Birthday Katie!
