Confucius, revered as the greatest teacher in Chinese history, has also deeply impacted the thought and cultures of Japan, Korea and Vietnam. The Republic of China (Taiwan) observes Confucius’ birthday on September 28. The People’s Republic of China (mainland China) celebrates his birthday in late September/early October since they use the lunar calendar (8th moon, 27th day).

Book - Army of DavidsGlenn Reynolds’ most recent book, An Army of Davids, makes a great read. The book focuses on the growing economic and social influence of the “little-guy” individuals – the Davids  from empowerment by new technologies. “Small guys” – “amateur journalists, musicians, small businessmen and women” – matter more and more.

The author, a University of Tennessee law professor, is the creator and writer of one of the Internet’s best-known blogs, Instapundit.com.

Thank you Wayne Hepburn. He became fascinated by elephants  years ago when his daughter gave him a paperweight with elephants in the design. He's even ridden elephants!

Wayne worked to create a special day of recognition for us peaceful pachyderms. Because of his efforts, since 1996 September 22nd has been designated "Elephant Appreciation Day!"

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting New York Times best-selling author Susan Piver. Her most recent book is How Not to Be Afraid of Your Own Life (below). I think life’s pretty scary sometimes, so that book struck a chord. She was kind, energetic and friendly. I liked her!

Susan Piver book - How Not to be Afraid of Own Life

I'm not the only one who gets scared. Some pretty well-known performers like Barbra Streisand, Andrea Bocelli, and Carly Simon have experienced a lot of stage fright. I’m looking forward to when I can honestly believe Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s encouraging words in his first inaugural speech that “the only thing we have to fear it fear itself.”  He never met the mean girls in my school. Life isn’t too bad, though, if they’re the worst of my worries!

A few weeks ago Computious met the talented Gail Kantor, the co-founder and CEO of "eJamming."  eJamming provides virtual studios and/or concert halls that let musicians (professionals and amateurs — that's me!!) in different geographic locations play and learn or perform with each other over the internet. At the same time. As if we're all in the same room! And eJamming's software manages the delays caused by distance really well.

Gail is a dynamo, with such an interesting background! She started out as one of Bette Midler’s backup singers and later sang in many well-known commercials for companies like Pepsi, McDonald’s, and Ford Motors. Then she became an executive producer for multi-million dollar concert fundraising events, including a Gaultier fashion show with Madonna and a celebrity tribute to Andrew Lloyd Webber. Wow!

A few months ago, Gail and eJamming co-founder Alan Jay Glueckman were chosen by Fortune Magazine as two of the 24 top Innovators (article below).

eJamming - Fortune Magazine Most Innovative

Can’t wait to try eJamming! More than 8,000 musicians in 142 countries are using the public beta (testing stage) version now, which is free. In the future, there will be a small monthly fee. There are some demo videos on YouTube, including this one. Here’s the link to eJamming, as well as a podcast of an interview with Gail.

I got really mad because I was hungry. But when she apologized, I felt much better, especially after she explained that she had slipped and scraped her leg.

I know there are people who don’t like to apologize. But did you know there are health benefits for the ones saying “sorry”?  Some include less worry, better sleep, and normal blood pressure. There are financial benefits too. In the medical field, apologies sometimes reduce malpractice lawsuits and related expenses!

Elman the Elephant

I just found out about a terrific website called “e Boo Boos” (great name!). It helps you find more bargains on eBay by locating overlooked items due to misspellings! Here’s how they describe themselves:

“e Boo Boos is a unique search tool used to hunt down misspelled auction items listed on eBay. eBay does not contain a spell checker and many auction items go unnoticed because nobody finds these items when searching using the correctly spelled word.”

And here’s the link.
