Confucius, revered as the greatest teacher in Chinese history, has also deeply impacted the thought and cultures of Japan, Korea and Vietnam. The Republic of China (Taiwan) observes Confucius’ birthday on September 28. The People’s Republic of China (mainland China) celebrates his birthday in late September/early October since they use the lunar calendar (8th moon, 27th day).

Taiwan refers to Confucius’ birthday as “Teacher’s Day,” because
of his advocacy of education for everyone. A week from today is UNESCO’s “World Teachers’ Day,” which is celebrated in more than 100 countries.
