what a modern grandma! We were going to tease her about
being a “cyber-granny,” but then we learned about Australian
Olive Riley. She’s the oldest known blogger at 108 years old!
February 16th marked the first anniversary of her blog. It’s
called “The Life of Riley.” Here’s a video of her birthday

My wonderful Great-Aunt Gertrude died and went to heaven
recently. She was 89 years old. I remember her smiling, wise-
looking face, with black hair pulled back tightly in a bun. She
always encouraged us to read, highly recommending the works
of Shakespeare as well as the Bible. Years ago she taught
Mandarin Chinese at Yale University. She raised five children
of good character who are now some of my adult aunts and
uncles. Thank you Great-Aunt Gertrude for your encouragement
and wisdom. I’ll remember you always.

Today is Presidents’ Day. It’s a U.S. federal holiday that started out
as the birthday observance of George Washington, the first U.S.
President. Later, since Abraham Lincoln was also born in February,
some states began to combine observance of his birthday with that
of George Washington’s. Now, various states and organizations
include other Presidents. Here’s some interesting information we
found – did you know:

The teddy bear was named after 26th U.S. president
Theodore ("Teddy") Roosevelt because he refused to
shoot a bear with her cub while on a hunting trip?

James Garfield, 20th president of the United States,
could write Greek with one hand while writing Latin with
the other?!

Abraham Lincoln carried documents in the stovepipe hat
we often see him with?

are some interesting numbers from the U.S. Census Bureau on
chocolate in the United States:

  $14.9 billion total value of shipments in 2006 for firms
producing chocolate and cocoa products vs. $6.2 billion for
non-chocolate confectionery products.

1,198 locations produced chocolate and cocoa
products in 2005 vs. 477 locations which produced
non-chocolate confectionery products.

  26 pounds per capita consumption of candy by
Americans in 2006. (Although PingPong the Panda
