More than 300 years ago, John Bunyan, author of The

Pilgrim’s Progress, recommended doing something good in
Book - Healing Power of Doing Good

secret for someone every day. Increas-

ingly, research shows the importance to

our own happiness of doing something

good for someone else — meeting true

needs within the parameters of our

personal limits. Click here for ideas on

This Monday, May 26th, we observe Memorial Day to honor those

who gave their lives to protect the freedoms we enjoy in the United

States. Click here to read about the history of this holiday. Click here

to see on a list of many of the wars and incidents in which Americans

were involved how many Americans were wounded or made the

ultimate sacrifice of their lives. I feel fortunate to be able to live in

this country.

Sweet & Sour:

This is the time of year when many students celebrate with a
graduation ceremony the transition of completing a program of
study to entering a new phase of their life.  MeiMei (Computious'
little sister) asked me why we have graduation ceremonies. And
what is the significance of the caps and gowns?  I wasn’t sure,
so I found some information online.

Interesting graduation ceremony history includes:

Graduation cap - thumbnail  The use of gowns for graduation originated in Europe
           in the 12th century;

Graduation cap - thumbnail  The first Baccalaureate ceremony is said to have taken
place at Oxford University in the 15th century.

Graduation cap - thumbnail   The first college in the United States to hold a Commencement
ceremony (when diplomas are given) was Harvard, in 1642.

Graduation cap - thumbnail   The United States Military Academy at West Point introduced
the first class ring in 1835.

Thank you to ArticleCat and 123 Greetings for the information.

A Special Mother’s Day Gift

Computious:

My father is teaching me how to express appreciation for all that my

mom does for us.  He says I’ll understand better when I’m older, but

it’s not too young to start now. He gave me an article on how to

write a Mother’s Day thank-you letter so I can give it to her this Sunday

as my gift. Here are parts of the article which helped me:

Mothers are our first teachers and the biggest compliment a mother can get is
when you tell her that she is the guiding light in your life and that you want to be
like her.

"A really simple and sincere Mother's Day gift that is sure to make Mom happy
is a heartfelt love letter expressing your appreciation for her," according to Vijay
Kannan, founder of breakthrough-letters.com.

"You could share any of the following messages in the letter" says Kannan:

"You owe it to her for who you are today"

"You did notice all the sacrifices she made for you"

"You're proud of her for raising you the way she did"

"You're blessed to have her as your mom"

"You're her biggest fan and dream about being like her"

"A letter is permanent and will make a lasting impression on Mom and is some-
thing she can read over and over again". According to Kannan, "Anybody can
write a good Mother's Day letter that is sure to make Mom feel proud by following
these 6 simple steps" –

1. Relax, It's a Love Letter to Mom - This love letter is an intimate conversation
between you and Mom and there are no rules to be abided by. Do not get caught
up in getting the letter right and using sophisticated words. Even if you make a
mistake, is Mom going to notice?

2. Collect Your Thoughts - Take some time to think about what you want to say
before you start writing. Go down memory lane and think about your growing up years
and how Mom was an integral part of that. What is the message you want to get across
at this moment in your life?

3. Overcoming Writer's Block - For most people, the difficulty in letter-writing is the start
and the close. You don't have to write the letter in a linear fashion. Write the part that
comes to you first. You can always go back and complete the other sections later.

4. Write From Your Heart - Be yourself and write from your heart. Write your letter as if
you were there talking to Mom face to face. Tell her how much you love her and appreci-
ate her and why.

5. Acknowledge Mom's Sacrifices - Let Mom know that you've noticed the sacrifices she's
made and that you appreciate her for all that she does. Mention one or two events from
the past to show her that you really remember. The older the event, the more dramatic
the impact it will have on Mom.

6. Give Mom the Greatest Compliment Ever - Imitation is the best form of flattery! Tell
Mom that you're her biggest fan and that you secretly wish to be like her! Tell her that
you have learned well from her and try to emulate her in many ways in your life. If you're
doing something specific with your kids that will make her proud, mention that in the letter.

"A Mother's Day Love Letter written using the above steps will give Mom the satisfaction
that money can never buy! This letter of yours is sure to be cherished, saved and read
many times over, for many years to come!" says Kannan.

"A final word of caution", Kannan says. "Write only what you really feel in your heart."
