Sweet &  Sour:

Unlike what many people think, pigs can be just as clean as

other popular pets. In fact, cleanliness and neatness are two

of my favorite topics! That's why I found a recent column by

Sue Shellenbarger of The Wall Street Journal fascinating. She

wrote about the benefits of requiring children to do housework.

Primary advantages include developing:

Sweet and Sour the pig - with broom self-reliance;

Sweet and Sour the pig - with broom a marriage preservation skill for young men;

Sweet and Sour the pig - with broom empathy and an attitude of caring for "community assets."

Computious:

We previously spoke of the significance of the number eight in Chinese
culture and why the Beijing Olympic Games opened on August 8 (08-08-08).
And eight was the all-important number for swimmer extraordinaire,
Michael Phelps.

Yesterday he set a new record for winning the most gold medals (eight!)
at a single Olympiad. This happened when he and his team came in first
in the men’s 4 × 100-meter medley relay. He also holds more gold medals
than any other Olympian – 14!

It’s fascinating to learn how Michael’s physique contributes to his
phenomenal success. He also consumes between 10,000 to 12,000 calories
a day. About five times what an average adult male eats! Wow, I wish I
could eat that much and be as slim as he is. We also respect that Michael
was one of the athletes who volunteered to be tested by the USADA
(U.S. Anti-Doping Agency) for performance-enhancing drugs. Click here
for more of Michael’s Olympic record-breaking story.

Scientists Reveal Portrait Under Van Gogh Painting

Serge deFault:

Two weeks ago today in Amsterdam, Netherlands, European scientists
presented a new process for revealing artwork under the top layer of
old masters’ paintings. The new technique uses high-intensity x-rays
from a particle accelerator (“atom smasher”) in combination with a deep
understanding of old pigments.

Joris Dik, a materials scientist from Delft University, and Koen Janssens,
a chemist from the University of Antwerp in Belgium, tested their new
technique on a Van Gogh painting, “Patch of Grass.” Their new method
revealed a portrait of a woman’s face and resulted in a higher quality
image than previous approaches, which also used x-rays. (It took two
days to scan the approximately seven-inch square area of the larger
painting!)

Art historians and scientists look forward to other similar exciting
discoveries in paintings by artists such as Rembrandt and Picasso.

Computious:

The number eight is considered lucky by many Chinese, which

is why opening day of the Olympics is today, 08/08/08. In

Mandarin and Cantonese, eight ("ba," "baht") sounds similar to

the word for prosperity. Many Chinese plan to marry today.

More than 9,000 couples are expected to marry in Beijing on

this day of good fortune! Americans of Chinese descent are

celebrating weddings today as well. Here are stories by

The Los Angeles Times and The New York Times.

PingPong:

This past Tuesday’s earthquake in the greater Los Angeles area struck

moderately with a magnitude 5.4.  The one in China on May 12, 2008,

was 7.9! There are reports that pandas were physically and psycho-

logically shaken by that powerful quake. The world’s largest panda

breeding center, the Wolong National Nature Reserve, lies just 18

miles from the epicenter of the May 12 quake. Fourteen of the 32

panda houses there were destroyed. Many pandas at the reserve

climbed trees during the earthquake and wouldn’t come down.

Click here for a story on what happened to some of those panicked

pandas.
