NASA invited the public recently to help name a new room at the
international space station. They held an online contest with participants
voting on one of four NASA-sponsored names. Because the contest
permitted write-ins, the most popular name ended up being “Colbert.”

Comedian Stephen Colbert, host of The Colbert Report, encouraged
viewers to write in his name. When voting ended March 20, his name
beat out the four NASA options. The space agency has final say, so
a more theme-appropriate name may be chosen. Click here to read more.

DotComplicated’s mom has a friend who is looking for a job. Turns
out there are some jobs now that are hard to fill. IT (information
technology) is one of them, especially programmers and developers!
That’s nice for me to hear since I love technology. Others on the list
include engineers, skilled trades (plumbers, carpenters) and accounting,

Computious:

How does modern digital technology, especially computers and video games,
affect our brains? Dr. Gary Small, focuses on this question in his new book
iBrain…Surviving the Technological Alteration of the Modern Mind. A respected

neuroscientist, Dr. Small discusses how high tech develops
certain regions of the brain more in those who have known
computer technology since birth (“digital natives”) versus in
those who learned technology as adults (“digital immigrants”).
Digital natives multi-task easily and are gaining in IQ scores.
They often lack social skills, though. The parts of the brain
that control empathy are not exercised adequately due to
lack of face-to-face interaction. 

Middle-aged digital immigrants are supposed to have an ad-
vantage because their brains are “plastic” enough to learn
new technologies, but they also had the chance to develop
critical social skills.

The good, the bad, and the ugly of high tech’s impact on brains:

Good: accelerated learning, increased creativity;

Bad: more social isolation, Internet addiction;

Ugly: steep rise in ADD diagnoses.

More than 3,000 musicians worldwide submitted videos on YouTube
to audition for the new YouTube Symphony Orchestra. Ninety musicians
from 30 countries were selected, including Eric Moe, a trumpet player
from Spokane, Washington. They will perform on April 15 at New York’s
