Ice Skaters I Love

PingPong - Giggles     Skates  PingPong's name

I love figure skating, and I’m soooooo excited about the 2007 U.S. Figure Skating Championships coming up in Spokane, Washington, January 21 – 28!!

Four of my favorite skaters won’t be in this year’s competition, but they’re all stars:

Of course I adore Michelle Kwan — she’s so graceful, has won all kinds of awards, and has the most “6.0’s” (perfect score) from the U.S. Nationals. Recently, Michelle became a volunteer diplomat for the State Department's Education and Cultural Affairs program. She’s studying international politics at the University of Denver, where Secretary of State Condoleeza Rice got her Ph.D. Guess what? Ms. Rice was a competitive skater when she was a child!

Then there’s the lovely Sasha Cohen who lives in beautiful Corona del Mar, CA. She’s not competing this year in order to take a break, but plans to be in the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

Another skater I love is Kurt Browning. He's in the Guinness Book of World Records for being the first person to land a quadruple toe loop in competition! He's married to ballerina Sonia Rodriguez (some of that gracefulness rubbed off on Kurt). I really like how much fun Kurt can be on the ice!

The fourth skater was not a professional one, but definitely a special one. In fact, the U.S. Figure Skating Hall of Fame is inducting him during January’s U.S. Championships in Spokane! It’s Charles Schulz, the creator of the Peanuts comic strip, one of the most popular in the world! When he was alive, he enjoyed ice hockey and figure skating, and even owned an ice skating rink in Santa Rosa, CA, called the Redwood Empire Ice Arena.  His wife will accept the award – here’s the story.
